With a communications degree under my belt, I took the first step of my career in a retail sales position. Working for a prestigious furniture company, I developed a taste for high-end consumer brands and obtained solid customer service skills that would see me through my career.
Armed with some work experience and commercial awareness, I moved on to a media monitoring company to develop content for its digital publications and social media platforms. The role put me on a path of constant growth within the marketing field.
I did a short stint as a retail manager which enhanced my understanding of in-store marketing and the retail world as a whole.
Soon afterward, I was approached to manage the sales and marketing for a small startup business – an African luxury lifestyle brand dedicated to promoting African luxury to the rest of the world. I fell in love with the brand and all it stood for and poured my heart and soul into bootstrapping to make it a success.
Later, when I worked as the marketing manager for a fitness academy, I led the redesign of the company’s website and the complete overhaul of its brand identity. I worked closely with the web team to improve website ranking and help drive traffic through keyword optimization and content strategy.
Estee Lauder really sharpened my professional skills. As the PR Manager for MAC Cosmetics for three years, I was exposed to how the company, one of the largest cosmetics brands in the world, operates at different levels in different regions of the world. I learned a new corporate language, became familiar with PNL’s, worked with dynamic teams across departments and soaked up everything working for a Fortune 500 Company affords.
All these roles saw me do everything needed to build a successful career in marketing, from developing marketing calendars to building audience personas, writing copy, maintaining websites, optimizing for SEO, overseeing the design of marketing material, working with agency partners, collaborating with press, overseeing participation in exhibitions and trade shows, managing social platforms, undertaking market research, managing events, managing marketing budgets and more!
